What Can You Do To Celebrate National Nurses’ Week?

TheraEx Staffing Services provided this article.

From compassionately assisting with life-threatening medical crises to advocating for the health of their patients during their most vulnerable moments, nurses perform some of the most difficult tasks in the medical world. National Nurses Week honors the contributions and sacrifices nurses make day in and day out and reminds us to thank the medical professionals that work so tirelessly to keep us healthy. With so many healthcare workers risking their health to care for the many communities impacted by COVID-19, the celebration takes on added meaning. Whether you come from a family of nurses, have friends in the nursing field, or you simply want to thank local nurses for their efforts, your support means more now than ever. Here are five ways you can thank the healthcare heroes in your local community for serving their patients with devotion, the utmost care, and exceptional professionalism as they continue to protect our health and safety during a global pandemic.

Be Understanding

Many healthcare workers have risen to the occasion of providing quality care to their communities throughout the pandemic. Nurses and other healthcare workers have taken on extra shifts or put in extra hours to ensure they are able to take care of their patients. If a friend or loved one is in this situation, be mindful of what they are going through and make sure you are not asking or expecting too much of them.

Send Flowers

Sometimes simply saying “Thanks” doesn’t feel like enough. Show some love to a nurse in your life with fresh flowers to show your appreciation for going above and beyond to help you or support you. Flowers like hydrangeas and roses are just the flowers for National Nurses Week because they symbolize gratitude, grace, beauty, and courage.

Donate a Meal

Nurses work long hours with few breaks. What better way to show appreciation and say thank you than with food? Due to COVID-19 protocols, if you’d like to donate a meal to healthcare workers, make sure it’s from a restaurant. Understandably, most hospitals are not accepting homemade goods currently, but many local restaurants are offering free deliveries. A hot meal from a restaurant can provide a sense of normalcy and some much-needed nourishment during a busy shift.

Handwrite a Note or a Card

Cards are a personal way to show someone that you appreciate them. In today’s world, instant communication through emails, social media posts, and text message is commonplace, while receiving a handwritten card or letter is rare. Handwriting a letter to express your gratitude could provide extra motivation for a nurse to continue moving forward during these trying times in the era of COVID-19.

Leave Positive Feedback

Nurses might not realize that the work they do each day is appreciated unless you tell them. Many nursing units provide incentives to nurses who receive positive patient feedback. Call the unit, ask for the charge nurse, ask for the patient feedback email or phone number, and put your experience in writing. Your positive feedback can brighten their day and remind them that their profession to care for others has made a positive impact.

Nominate a Nurse for a DAISY Award

Nurses go above and beyond the call of duty to provide exceptional care. The international DAISY award program celebrates nurses’ extraordinary clinical skills and the compassionate care they provide to their patients. If your life has been touched by an extraordinary nurse, nominate them for a DAISY Award to recognize the admirable attributes they possess.

Being a nurse is often physically demanding and almost always emotionally taxing. Nurses are caregivers, mentors, and leaders, steering the profession towards excellence in patient care and compassion. Today and every day, we thank each and every nurse for their tireless commitment in delivering outstanding patient care. You are our heroes.

15 Great Ideas to Celebrate Nurses Week

This article provided by: Accountable Healthcare Staffing.

Accountable Healthcare Staffing loves Nurses Week. It is a wonderful time to show our nurses the love and appreciation they so deserve. The American Nurses Association declared May 6-12 as the National Week to celebrate and elevate the nursing profession. National Nurses Week is a time for everyone – individuals, employers, other healthcare professionals, community leaders, and nurses – to recognize the vast contributions and positive impact of America’s 4-plus million registered nurses. Each year, the celebration ends on May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday.

Not sure how to show your appreciation all week long?

Our friends at Positive Promotions rounded up some of our favorite ways to celebrate National Nurses Week:

Arts & Crafts

Add a special touch to your nurses week gifts and celebrations by getting patients, students, or nurses themselves involved. Show your nurses how much you appreciate them with a sentimental, handmade gift.

1. Ask patients/residents to sign thank you cards for nurses. Then, distribute the cards along with gifts of appreciation.

2. Cut out stars from yellow construction paper, write the names of nurses on them, and attach the stars to a bulletin board in a common area of your facility. Place a banner across the top that says, “Our Nurses Are Stars!”

Even on a day or week when we’re celebrating them, nurses love to give back to the community. Plan a fundraiser or community-oriented event as part of your nurses week activities.

3. Hold a canned food drive for a local food pantry and involve all employees at your facility. Take a picture of nurses delivering the food at the end of the week and put the photo in your newsletter.

4. Plant a tree in honor of your nurses. Place a plaque next to it that dedicates it to your nursing staff.

Events & Activities

Go above and beyond when you’re celebrating your nurses by planning special events and hosting themed activities.

5. Decorate a common area of your facility with Balloons and Posters. Surprise nurses with colorful decorations at the beginning of the week.

6. Enjoy a picnic outside during National Nurses Week. Have dietary services provide sandwiches and salads.

7. Use this National Nurses Week to kick off your “Nurse of the Month” Recognition Program. Choose a special nurse who serves as a role model to honor during this first month.

8. Give everyone a matching T-Shirt to wear. Then, smile and say, “Nurses Rock!” by participating in a group photo with nurses from every shift. Submit the photos to a local newspaper.

Food

Nurses are often so busy caring for their patients that they don’t have the time to grab lunch or even a snack. Make sure your nurses are filled with delicious treats all week long.

9. Appeal to everyone’s sweet tooth with an ice cream social. Put out a variety of ice cream and toppings for nurses to enjoy.

10. Let nurses know that they warm everyone’s hearts. As a special treat one day, serve them heart-shaped cookies and hot chocolate.

11. Push a drink cart around your facility and stop by each nurses’ station. Serve up tea and coffee in Travel Mugs.

Games & Contests

Bring more fun and excitement to National Nurses Week with games and contests like Nurse Olympics or Nurse Bingo.

12. Hide “germs” around the facility for nurses to find. Attach a ticket to each one. Nurses can turn them in for prizes.

13. Highlight famous nurses of the past, such as Florence Nightingale and Clara Barton. Quiz your nurses about them and pass out small prizes to those who answer questions correctly.

Health

Nurses spend most of their day making sure that their patients are healthy. Take some time during National Nurses Week to make sure that all your nurses are in tip-top shape.

14. Hold a health fair, especially for your nurses. Offer free blood pressure screenings.

Relaxation

Help your nurses relax after an overnight shift or long day of tending to patients.

15. Brighten each nurse’s station with potted flowers, such as daffodils and tulips. Encourage nurses to take them home at the end of the week.

Be sure to follow Accountable Healthcare Staffing on social media. We will be giving away prizes all week. If you win, you can share them with your team or keep them all for yourself! www.facebook.com/AccountableHealthcareStaffing/

8 Fun and Unusual Ways to Celebrate Nurses Week Coast-to-Coast

8 Fun and Unusual Ways to Celebrate Nurses Week Coast-to-Coast

Nurses week is coming and so are some really fun – and slightly weird – events across the U.S. If you can’t get away during May to celebrate, plan for one of these awesome experiences before or after your assignment and get ready for a unique adventure you’ll never forget.

Florida

Weeki Wachee: City of Live Mermaids
Ever dreamed of becoming a mermaid? Then head to Weeki Wachee for its famous “Mermaid Shows,” where you can watch “real” mermaids put on an enchanting performance in an underwater theater. Becoming a Weeki Wachee mermaid is highly competitive – and don’t think for a second that it doesn’t take immense endurance and strength to make swimming with a tail look that graceful! Head to Florida to check out this exciting, yet weird event.

Flora-Bama Interstate Mullet Toss
Sometimes the strangest events are the most fun, and that’s certainly the case with the Flora-Bama Interstate Mullet Toss. It’s exactly like it sounds: Participants toss mullets across the Florida state line into Alabama and see whose gets the farthest. The event has turned into a huge beach party, with hotel bookings “done months, if not years in advance.” Check it out for yourself and report back to us!

Louisiana

New Orleans Pharmacy Museum
All travel nurses assigned to Louisiana should visit the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum. You’ll see apothecary jars, delicate vials and curious instruments straight out of the olden days, gaining a fascinating insight into how medicine used to look. Be sure to spot the voodoo “Love Potion No. 9” sitting on a shelf, Atlas Obscura recommended. Louisiana Jobs are plentiful.

Louisiana Mudfest
Had a frustrating week and need to unwind? The Louisiana Mudfest may be just the event for you. This quirky festival features three straight days of playing in the mud. Messy? Yes. Memorable? You bet.

Colorado

Celestial Seasonings Factory Tour
There’s no better stress reliever than a steaming mug of herbal tea at the end of a long day. You can experience tea heaven by taking a tour of the Celestial Seasonings factory in Boulder. Be sure to stop by the tasting room, where you can sample all 105 varieties of the brand’s teas.

Ullr Fest
Skiing is a favorite pastime in Colorado, but Ullr Fest takes it to a new level. In the state’s quaint mountain town of Breckenridge, you’ll find more than 12,000 visitors partying up Viking-style with impressive costumes and an elaborate parade. Colorado has something for all Seasons.

Maine

The Desert of Maine
Maine has some gorgeous scenery, with its rocky coastline and lush forests, but if you need a change of pace, you can visit the famous “Desert of Maine.” Some poor farming practices in the late 1700s led to the soil on this 40-acre slice of land to turn to sand and silt, Atlas Obscura explained. It’s not quite as impressive a sight as the Sahara, but still pretty neat.

Central Maine Egg Festival
At the Central Maine Egg Festival, you can see the world’s largest frying pan – it’s 10 feet in diameter and is heated by special gas burners. If that’s not enough, you can also decorate wooden eggs, cheer on competitors in the Egglympics and vote for the tastiest dish at the Quiche & Cheesecake Contest. Live music, barbecue and a farmers market round out this off-kilter but popular festival. Find your Maine Job here so you can enjoy all that Maine has to offer.

No matter what you do to commemorate Nurses Week…

we hope you feel appreciated and loved for the often-unrecognized care you provide to patients and families every day. You’re our hero.
