  • Shift: 3pm – 11:30pm with every other weekend, 13week contract length, 40-hour work weeks: 5X8s
  • Facility / Services:
Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center is currently a 169 bed long term care / short term rehab center for chronically ill and medically fragile children. The facility (we are NOT a hospital) is not accredited by the Joint Commission but our standards and practices are equivalent to facilities whom are. We have nurse managers, house supervisors 24/7, in house physicians and nurse practitioners. We have a variety of ancillary support including certified nursing assistants, respiratory therapists, PT, OT, speech therapy, music and art therapy in addition to child life specialists. Interaction with family members varies completely depending on the child. Many have little to no family involvement.

    Children’s conditions:

  • Some of our children stay with us for only a short time for things such as feeding therapy. Many of our children stay with us for years, leaving only when they graduate to an adult nursing home type setting. Typical diagnoses include hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, seizure disorders, cerebral palsy and chronic lung disease. We offer palliative care and pain management. Most of our children have G tubes or GJ tubes and tracheostomies with some requiring ventilator assistance.

Long Term Children’s Home vs Acute Care Nursing:

  • We recently expanded from 6 units with a total of 137 children to 8 units with 169 children. There are no traditional nursing stations as everything is set up to feel like a home rather than an institution. We use Sigma Careas our EMR.
  • There are no FULL CODES here at all. We stabilize children and transfer them out as needed. Full life support is not available here. When we transfer a child out, it is standard procedure for nurses (both staff and travelers) to accompany the child. Nurses are also needed to, at times, accompany children to routine clinic appointments at nearby hospitals.
  • There are no peripheral IVs here. We do a lot of tube feedings (NG, Gtube and Jtube) and give a lot of anti-seizure meds. We also do dressing changes and trach care / suctioning. Some of our children use bair huggers for temp instability. During the day many of the children attend school which is located within our building. They also receive the majority of their therapies during the day. At night, most kids are sleeping so there are fewer ancillary staff. (no PT, OT, Speech therapy)
  • Typical assignments per nurse can include between 4 to 8 children. Nurses are responsible for providing some total care for the children. This includes bathing, dressing and applying braces.
