Nurses Week 2013
Mara Owens RN, BSN, CLC is the 2013 “Gypsy Florence Nightingale”
In Recognition of Nurses Week, The Gypsy Nurse provided it’s readers an opportunity to shine a spotlight on a travel nurse that has made a difference or encouraged someone to aspire to be a “Gypsy Florence Nightingale”.

“At present, Mara Owens is a full time staff RN at Roosevelt Hospital (Continuum Health Partners) who previously came to work with us as a travel nurse, starting on the night shift and later on the day shift which is when she currently works. I have had the great fortune to work with her on both shifts and currently. She exudes such high energy and goes far and beyond to ensure that her patients as well as their families are comfortable and needs are met beyond the basic expectation.
Our department, Maternal Child has had the honor to bring Mara on board in her attempts to put some roots down for a bit, although she has expressed wanting to go back on the road again to do travel nursing. Mara is a great team player as well as one to take initiative on the unit, often assuming the care of a patient until their assigned nurse is available.
Frequently, our unit can get demanding with a short staff of nurses, and Mara is able to remain calm, patient, focused and on the move with providing outstanding care to her patients, families and at times to her fellow colleagues. Mara is often ready to listen and willing to bring back lunch on her quick runs for a bite once hunger pangs and she’s ready to answer her personal call to “refuel.”
“I know that travel nursing is still in her blood and that she will always be one at heart.” – Gale Rosalynn Lewis, RN, BSN, MA, CLC Staff RN
Mara also contributes to the activities on the unit without hesitation. Her nursing knowledge and practice is well rounded from her studies as well as the varied experiences that she has acquired while doing travel nursing; Mara is truly an asset to our unit where we treat not only mother baby couplets, but antepartum mothers and NICU mothers. Although Mara has been with us for about three years, I know that travel nursing is still in her blood and that she will always be one at heart. Her love of travel on the whole seems to be also a hobby that blended well with nursing. If it were not for her travel nursing assignment at our hospital, we may have missed out on the treasure that she is to us in more ways than one.
Thus, I want to take the time to give her the recognition that we love her, value her contributions to the unit and are thankful that she chose “us” as her home, for the moment, to hang around and place some roots! I champion her extraordinary light and charm that is a breath of fresh air to our unit as one of our exceptional nurses with about eight years of nursing under her belt. Mara is an example of what makes nursing a phenomenal profession and I wish to pay tribute with my nomination of her for the 2013 Gypsy Florence Nightingale award.” – Gale Rosalynn Lewis, RN, BSN, MA, CLC Staff RN
