EssentialDuties and ResponsibilitiesAssistsin localizing tumors, participate in treatment planning and deliver high dosesof ionizing radiation prescribed by a radiation oncologist.Maintaina high degree of accuracy and an awareness of safety issues.Remainssensitive to the physical and emotional needs of patients.Demonstratesan understanding of cancer, radiation biology, radiation therapy techniques,equipment technology, radiation safetyandthe psychosocial aspects of cancer.Usesprofessional judgment and critical thinking when assisting with treatmentplanning, recognizing and resolving equipmentproblemsand treatment discrepancies.Anticipatespatient needs and concerns and determines when treatment should be withhelduntil a physician can be consulted.Demonstratescompetency to deliver optimal radiation therapy treatments to all patients,CT/Sim and conventional sim, HDR, Moldroom,IMPAC, Portal Vision/Viewstation, basic dose calculations, and billingprocedures.Assistswith Diagnostic CT as requested.Reviewspatient treatment records and doses daily to ensure that treatment does notexceed prescribed dose or normal tissuetolerance.Determineswhen to contact the physician with patient side effects/questions. Determinesthe course of action for an emergency or problem situation.Verifiesthe patient has consented to the procedure.Addressesand documents patient questions and concerns regarding the procedure whenappropriate. Refers questions aboutdiagnosis,treatment or prognosis to the patient’s physician.Providesinformation and instruction on proper skin care, diet and self-care procedures.Takesportal film according to established protocols. Reviews portal films andinitiates changes as necessary.Verifiesthe accuracy of the patient setup prior to treatment delivery. Verifiestreatment console readouts and settings prior totreatment.Checkspatients’ charts weekly.Documentsdiagnostic, treatment and patient data in the appropriate record. Documents anyexceptions from the establishedcriteriaor procedures.Verifiesthe mathematical accuracy of the prescription and the daily treatment summary.Maintainsdocumentation of quality assurance activities, procedures and results inaccordance with established guidelines.Documentsand reports to appropriate personnel the need for equipment maintenance andrepair.Demonstratescompletion of the appropriate education related to clinical practice.
