Graduation from a formal Nuclear Medicine training program is required. 1 years of experience as a Nuclear Med Tech in a hospital-based setting. Must have a current BLS certification. Excellent communicator in written and verbal format; ability to handle complex situations; strong team player. Safety/Risk Management: Locates & properly operates oxygen, suction, blood pressure, IV pump & other essential patient care equipment. Consistently observes patients before, during and after procedures. Utilizes appropriate mobilization devices. Appropriately transfers patients to/from stretchers/wheelchairs & on/off imaging table, giving care to IVs & other appliances. Safely operates all equipment & immediately reports malfunctions. Locates all emergency switches on equipment. Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures and radiation safety. Assures that all data entered/retrieved from physician s orders and/or computer system is accurate prior to performing patient s exam. Understands biohazard safety and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations. Properly receives, stores, and disposes of radioactive material. Performs radiation detection surveys and wipes; decontaminate if appropriate. Communicates to the nuclear medicine manager or immediate supervisor any abnormalities in daily routines such as physicians or patient concerns, equipment malfunction, or any other information pertinent to patient safety and department functioning. Practices proper radiation safety following ALARA. Demonstrates knowledge of emergency procedures. Meets annual competency requirements. Coordination of Services: Reviews orders for appropriate diagnosis. Appropriately schedules patient & department resources for services. Performs all procedures according to protocol stated in procedure manual, unless directed otherwise by radiologist/physician. Presents completed procedure to radiologist/ physician for interpretation. Collaborates with staff members and physicians to assure delivery of optimal patient care at all times. Demonstrates ability to revise department schedule and staff assignments to meet patient and physician needs to maintain a smooth functioning department with limited rooms and/or equipment. Assumes responsibility for portions of the quality improvement program. Keeps all documentation current & available. Follows through with any problem areas. Assists in department orientation program as needed; assumes responsibility of training new staff. Contributes to development of educational needs of support staff and/or students. Complex Aspects: Demonstrates proficiency in performing quality control on all nuclear cameras before imaging patients. Prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals for exams in accordance with procedure manual. Recognizes problems and corrects as needed. Discards contaminated materials in appropriate waste containers. Documents information in electronic Nuclear Medicine Information System. Performs computer processing of data for all procedures. Keeps up to date with all new upgrades. Performs radiopharmaceutical quality control according to department procedure. Takes corrective action as needed. Works with nuclear medicine management in maintaining departmental policies and procedures. Primary Aspects: Greets patients by name; introduces self; provides patients with thorough explanation of procedures; efficiently performs procedure. Uses good judgment with add-on cases to meet patient needs and department needs without disrupting schedule. Understands safe and proper camera operation. Knows camera emergency procedures and radiation safety procedures. Reviews as needed. Demonstrates technical proficiency in producing diagnostic images with the ability to recognize technical abnormalities. Selects the appropriate techniques for each procedure. Positions patients according to department protocol. Prepares and stocks rooms for various exams; checks equipment between patients; orders supplies as needed. Cleans room and equipment between patients, including injection rooms. Effectively alters routine procedures when patient condition indicates making appropriate changes on requisitions. Submits correct charges for tracers and supplies used. Assists in the transportation of patients. Responsible for sending all images to PACS. Works fair share of on-call and weekends. Expected arrival within 30 minutes of ‘call in’. Willing to adjust personal schedule in case of fluctuations in workload or departmental need. Displays flexibility by willingly working in any area or changing scheduled work hours. Maintains alignment with PTO policy. Clocks in & out at scheduled time, no earlier than six minutes before/after scheduled shift; eliminates (when possible) overtime on a weekly basis. Communication Management: Routinely questions patient/family members before a procedure to obtain pertinent patient history. Always questions female patients as appropriate as to whether they may be pregnant or nursing and take appropriate action. Monitors equipment operation and alerts appropriate personnel of any problems in a timely manner. Keeps manager/supervisor informed of any issues, problems or situations requiring attention or follow up. Recognizes the need to assist other staff members during the busy times throughout the day. Asks what needs to be done and readily volunteers in other areas. Shares all relevant information at end of shift. Reports both verbally and written. Assures all communications regarding patient care are timely & appropriate. Recognizes patient crises & initiates appropriate measures. Informs physician of any unusual circumstances involving patient studies. Technology: Understands applications and effectively uses hospital and department computer systems. Enters, saves, prints, and retrieves information from systems; uses barcodes to improve accuracy. Ensures that all procedure charges are properly entered/revised in system and/or submitted to appropriate person throughout shift. Performs equipment quality control testing as required, i.e., daily floods, nuclear pharmacy equipment, weekly and/or daily wipes and surveys. Keeps abreast of new technology. Accepts responsibility for keeping informed of current department practices. Initiates appropriate downtime procedures when necessary. Stays in compliance with continuing education credits for certification renewal. Understands how to enter information into ECG machines. Able to setup ECG equipment for stress testing.
