Social Worker (Children’s Higher Grade)

Brief Job Overview

 
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Children’s Social Worker to join Portsmouth City Council at Higher Grade level. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and supportive service, working with children and families across Child Protection, Court, and Looked After Children (LAC) work.  

You will bring substantial experience, excellent analytical and report writing skills, and the ability to manage complex cases within timescales. This role is ideal for a confident practitioner who thrives in a busy, high-performing team and is committed to achieving the best outcomes for children and young people.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of complex cases including Child Protection (CP), Looked After Children (LAC), and Court proceedings.
• Undertake high-quality assessments, care planning, and interventions in accordance with statutory frameworks and local policies.
• Prepare and deliver clear, evidence-based reports and court statements within set timescales.
• Work collaboratively with families, professionals, and partner agencies to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people.
• Develop effective working relationships with key partners to ensure joined-up planning and coordinated services.
• Use professional judgment and reflective practice to make informed decisions that improve outcomes for children and families.
• Contribute to a supportive and high-performing team culture, sharing best practice and supporting colleagues where required.
• Participate in supervision, team meetings, and training to maintain and enhance professional knowledge and skills.
• Ensure all casework is accurately recorded and compliant with Portsmouth City Council procedures and statutory requirements.

About You

 
You are an experienced and capable Children’s Social Worker with a proven track record in safeguarding and care planning. You demonstrate resilience, strong analytical skills, and an ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.  

You are confident in your assessments, thrive in a collaborative team setting, and are driven by a passion for achieving the best outcomes for children and young people. Holding a valid driving licence is preferable due to the nature of the role.

Requirements

• Qualified Social Worker registered with Social Work England.
• Minimum of 3 years’ permanent statutory experience in line with Social Work Reforms (essential).
• Experience of working across Child Protection (CP), Court, and Looked After Children (LAC) cases.
• Excellent report writing and communication skills, with the ability to meet strict timescales.
• Proven ability to work effectively as part of a busy, multi-agency team.
• Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance, and best practice in children’s social care.
• Sound professional judgment and the ability to make informed, evidence-based decisions.
• Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (preferred).

Contract & Salary

• Job Type: Locum
• Location: Portsmouth City Council
• Service Area: Children’s Social Care
• Contract Length: 3 months (with potential for extension)
• Salary: Negotiable, dependent on experience
• Working Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week
• Working Pattern: Office-based, with some flexibility
