Awful place to work. I was assigned to the burn unit with no burn experience. They claim it was med surg level of care but at times I questioned that. I felt like they tried to hide the level of care because if you look up the orders it would say level of care: “burn unit” instead of an actual level of care such as med-surg, PCU, ICU. Often times I would get floated to the actual PCU unit to take PCU patients (verified by their level of care orders which were more clear) when I was contracted for med surg. When I complained that this was a violation of my contract they told me to deal with it and if I had a problem adjusting a pump to ask someone else. PCU level of care is obviously more than just pressing a button on the pump… Their PCU takes 5-6 patients each as well.Always short staffed. Very heavy floor, high acuity. Typically 6-7 patients, no tech. One day they were pushing 8 patients per nurse. As you can guess, lots of wounds. Doctor comes in at 5:30am to rip everyone’s dressing off then the day nurse is responsible to dress them all first thing when you get to work as if you don’t have enough to do. Dressing changes can easily take 30 min+ each that you are doing yourself, no help, even when you need to turn a patient to get their back side dressings. Speaking of the doctor, he is extremely rude and one of the most entitled doctors I’ve ever met. But apparently he’s God’s greatest gift because he brings in a lot of money to the hospital. Lots of drains, pumps, surgical prep, often times drawing your own labs, everyone is on isolation. Lots of total care, demanding patients. All your patients are pain, nauseous, and miserable. Everyone has multiple IV antibiotics. Every hour you have meds to give. No supplies. Searching the entire hospital to find oxygen flow meters to hook to the wall, suction regulators. These are basic safety supplies. Why do I need to go on a hunt for the entire hospital just to make sure my patient has oxygen and suction set up in the room? Never have dressing supplies, IV pumps, etc. Only good thing I can say about this floor is a few of the other nurses and the floor manager Devin.
