This is Portlandia. She is in front of a building in Portland, OR

What was your favorite location? Favorite Hospital? Why?

Location:

I have enjoyed all of my assignments except two. But even the two I didn’t like, I have good friends that I keep in touch with. I have been very blessed in my traveling life.

Hospital:

Probably the Dallas VA hospital. I thoroughly enjoyed everyone I worked with. When I go to Dallas, I go visit them and I am welcomed and missed.

What is the longest you’ve been in one location? The shortest?:

Longest: Dallas VA, I was there a year.

Shortest: Supply, NC. It was 5 1/2 days. My son-in-law was killed in Iraq when I left to be with my daughter. The contract was cancelled when I couldn’t work Christmas as I needed to be with my daughter and granddaughter for their first Christmas without husband and father.

Share why you started Travel Nursing:

I wanted to travel since I worked with travelers in the early 90′s

Have you changed specialties while traveling? Please explain.

I started ICU but with my first assignment, I was told I wasn’t needed or wanted. They didn’t want to cancel my contract, so the moved me to PACU.

If you could give one piece of advice to a new travel nurse, what would it be? (feel free to list more than one).

Get guaranteed hours, you contract is as good as the paper it is written on; if you haven’t signed it, it is not valid

Tell me about an experience that stands out from you Travel Nurse career. It could be clinical, funny, while on the road, etc.

I have numerous experiences I could list but that would get boring. I have been very blessed to be the places I have been and have the friends I have. I was with my daughter when my first granddaughter was born (her daddy was still in Iraq. I was near my daughter when my son-in-law was killed in Iraq. I was able to spend six weeks with her. I have a few bad experiences, but I have many more great experiences.

What do you feel was the biggest mistake that you made related to travel nursing? What advice would you give a new traveler to prevent making the same mistake?

My biggest mistake was in thinking I was important to my recruiter. I have had a few where I did not feel I was their priority. Now I know what I want and I don’t sign a contract if it does not contain what I want.

Wow, I cannot imagine being at one place for just one year or less. Do you rent or lease when you move each time? It sure must never get boring :)
